The tempo of this film is set by the electronic pulse of a dozen travelers in a Volkswagen camper who are on a road in central Poland. The Gypsies do not talk, and the sounds they make are mostly human sounds, songs, the songs they sing, and the sounds they make when they dance. The frames of this film are filled with people, mostly, but not only, Gypsies. In the center of each frame, or at least in the center of the screen, the travelers dance; they are often framed so that they appear to be taking part in a single and continuous dance. The camera movement is not artistic, and the camera does not seek out particularly interesting details, but the camera follows the travelers. The film is dense with travelers, but we rarely see travelers from a distance; most of the time, the camera follows the travelers. The music, often instrumental, follows the travelers, or, more precisely, tracks the travelers. The sound of the travelers dancing is always, or almost always, consistent, although individual Gypsies’ dances can be different. The travelers are similar to each other, but not identical; different people have different rhythms of movement. Also, travelers can vary in the way they look at the camera. Some travelers look at the camera and smile and wave at the camera, and others look at the camera and express dismay. The film also shows small and large meetings of Gypsies, both in the area in which they are dancing and outside of it, in the spaces between small and large groups. The film is unusual, too, in the way it makes conversation, using the space between travelers, as the medium of their conversation. Gypsies often make short speeches, which they sing. They sing the words “Meet,” “No,” “I no,” “You no,” “We no,” “Yes.” The characters may seem to be singing in the film, but they are not; they are speaking or making short speeches. Although Gypsies have long been associated with music and dancing, in this film the Gypsies dance and sing, but they do not play any instruments.
