The two-day Tucson Padres camp is over, and more than 1,000 fans gathered Monday at the Community Action Center to witness the event. And while the sun was shining bright for most of the event, the Padres are headed back to the cooler temps of the valley in Tucson, but Arizona State defensive coordinator Pete Grubb did his best to make it feel like spring. Grubb hit the dirt, chose a Sun Devil theme for his uniform and told players that they were being tested. “I told the guys, we know you’re coming here for the first time,” Grubb said. “We’ve been preparing you for the last three weeks, and we’re really going to test you out today. You’re going to learn some things. I’m going to show you what I see on film. “You’re going to see some things that people have never seen before,” Grubb said. “You’re going to see a new scheme. You’re going to see a new staff. And, you know, that’s what happens every time.” Grubb’s players were put through a series of drills Monday morning in preparation for the first of two practices in the Arizona Sun Devils’ campus. The event was scheduled so that players could see Grubb’s defensive approach and see his take on film study. It was Grubb’s first time working with a new coaching staff, as the three coaches, led by National College Football Hall of Fame coach Dennis Erickson, have spent the last three weeks watching film and coming up with a game plan. They’re looking to put the players in position to succeed in the future. “We’re going to put them in a position to be successful in the future,” Grubb said. “A lot of times they can’t see it that clearly, so I’m going to do my job and get them in position to be successful. I’m going to coach them, get them into position to be successful.” ASU
